Installing a Retaining Ring

Radial vs Axial Retaining Ring Installation Methods

When installing a retaining ring, you must first consider the application. Bore retaining rings are categorized as internal retaining rings since they are installed inside the bore. Shaft retaining rings, however, fit within the external retaining rings category as they are installed on the outside of the shaft.
There are two types of retaining ring installation methods, axial installation and radial installation. Axial is the installation standard where the retaining ring is installed along the axis.

Radial installation is a suitable solution when access to the axis is not possible. Another reason for the radial method is when assembly/disassembly speed is important. The C retaining ring or E retaining ring are ideal for radial installation due to their partial open side retaining ring design.
